Get on the green in Canada’s Greenbelt
Niagara-on-the-Lake is celebrated for its selection of wineries and local cuisine, but the Greenbelt also offers an incredible array of golf courses that will wow avid and amateur golfers alike. Unfamiliar with all that Niagara golf courses have to offer? Here is a snapshot of some of the top-rated golf courses in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Legends on the Niagara
Described as one of Canada’s premier public golf destinations, Legends on the Niagara features two championship courses spanning 45 acres of stunning fairways and well-maintained greens. Golfers can choose to play on Ussher’s Creek, the Battlefield Course or the Chippawa Executive Course. If you’re spending the weekend in the Greenbelt, we recommend trying more than one of these courses as they offer diverse levels of difficulty, but are equally beautiful and enjoyable.
The Ussher’s Creek course is naturally endowed with awe-inspiring views. The course will challenge skilled golfers to manoeuvre through forests, wetlands and an intimidating rough. The Battlefield was designed to be a unique course whose features demand golfers play strategically to conquer the long fairways and to avoid the dense brush surrounding the greens. The Chippawa Executive Course is the smallest of the three courses, but the Legends’ pros still warn, “It should not be taken lightly.”
The Whirlpool Golf Course
Enjoy stunning views of the Niagara River Whirlpool and Gorge while tackling one of Canada’s most highly regarded golf courses. The famous golf architect, Stanley Thompson, designed this heritage course and he ensured the layout would provide an enjoyable level of difficulty while highlighting the natural beauty of Niagara. By the 1980’s, more than 1 million golfers had enjoyed playtime at the Whirlpool Golf Course, and it has received positive affirmations from private and public golfers alike.
Grand Niagara Golf Course
Designed by world-renowned golf architect Rees Jones, local golfers and those who visit from across Canada rank this course as one of the very best in the Niagara region. The Welland River borders this beautiful and challenging course, so golfers can enjoy a calming atmosphere while attempting to navigate the Grand Niagara’s lengthy fairways.
The Royal Niagara Golf Club
From its beginnings, the Royal Niagara Golf Club was designed to draw in golfers who are attracted to the Niagara region’s diverse landscapes and gorgeous greens. The Royal Niagara Golf Club is internationally renowned and offers golfers three 9-hole courses; The Escarpment Course, The Iron Bridge Course, and The Old Canal Course. The expansive courses extend over 7,000 yards where golfers will encounter the 120-year-old Welland Canal, the Bruce Trail and the Niagara Escarpment.
Avid golfers will love the unique design of each of the nines, as they play along the sculpted fairways imagined by the extremely particular Architect Ted Baker. In accordance with his original vision, the course doesn’t intrude upon the Niagara landscape. Baker ensured the carefully constructed fairways and greens would blend into and celebrate Niagara’s natural finery.
Make the most out of your golf getaway by playing each of the 9-hole courses during your weekend away in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club
Established in 1875, the Niagara-on-the-Lake Club is North America’s oldest course – and its excellence has truly stood the test of time. The course is a Niagara region favourite, and Golf Digest ranked the club as one of the top 9-hole courses in the world, outside of the USA.
Golfers can play 9 holes or 18 as they walk the shores of Lake Ontario, which extends along the entire course. The beauty of the scenery is matched only by the Niagara-on-the-Lake Club’s heritage. As you enjoy your golf game, you may get a sense of how special the course is.
While the club is open to the public, the service is top notch and golfers visiting the course will get the sense they are playing on exclusive fairways. Guests who visit the course can also take a break to enjoy drinks and live entertainment on the “19th Hole”, a picturesque patio that looks out over the water.
Experience the history of exceptional golf that has earned the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club a high reputation, within the Niagara region and internationally.
Rolling Meadows Golf & Country Club
This eighteen-hole Royal Canadian Golf Association member course was established in 1970, but the fairways were updated in 2006 to ensure every golfer would be challenged to show off their shot making abilities. Stay alert on this course to avoid hazards and be sure to take in the natural beauty of the layout, which golfers describe as a lively green paradise.
Eagle Valley Golf Course
If you and your travel partners are looking for a golf course that offers as much enjoyment and diverse terrain as it does difficulty, spend the day exploring Eagle Valley Golf Course. Two distinct nines make up this 18-hole executive golf course, so you’ll see a variety of fairways, rolling sand mounds and elevation changes throughout your game.
